Cold Showers Reduce Heat Loss Less Than Expected
A thermophysiologist explains that while a cold shower feels refreshing, it only offers limited cooling because skin blood vessels constrict, slowing heat release. After exiting a cold shower, these vessels remain narrowed for a period, making it harder for the body to emit new heat. In contrast, a hot shower triggers mechanisms that promote heat loss but also adds new heat, leading to sweating that modestly enhances cooling.
The expert recommends a lukewarm shower during hot weather – cool enough to be below core body temperature but not so cold that vessels constrict excessively. This approach prolongs the refreshing effect. For additional cooling, methods such as applying a damp cloth to create an evaporative layer, staying in the shade, staying hydrated, and avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat are advised.
