Cold wave brings sub‑zero temperatures to Southern Brazil

A polar air mass has moved into the southern part of Brazil, producing a cold wave with night‑time temperatures below zero. The cold front reached Rio Grande do Sul first, where a temperature of –0.3 °C was recorded in Monte Alegre dos Campos, marking the first sub‑zero reading in June for the state. Subsequent nights (June 15‑18) are forecast to see widespread sub‑zero lows across Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and parts of Paraná, with minima expected to drop to –3 °C to –6 °C in elevated areas and occasional frost in many municipalities.

The system is also expected to affect the central‑south and southeastern regions, bringing cooler nights and rain to parts of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso do Sul. While the strongest chill will be felt in the southern highlands, milder but still unusually low temperatures are forecast for the rest of the country through the middle of the week.
