Buenos Aires expands winter aid for homeless during polar cold

The Direction of Critical Aid of the Ministry of Development in Buenos Aires province has stepped up territorial operations this winter, sending teams to identify and assist people living on the streets. Assistance includes blankets, hot meals, essential items and, when needed, shelter at the Albergue del Polideportivo Juan Domingo Perón, with a dedicated phone line for community reports.

In Rosario, the community kitchen La Morena, which serves more than 700 people daily, has issued an urgent request for blankets, winter clothing and non‑perishable food to protect diners from sub‑zero temperatures. The kitchen also relies on volunteers and public donations to continue its daily meals.

The municipality of La Matanza and local parishes have activated the “Frío Cero” campaign, opening shelters at the Hospital de Campaña and Club Flecha, and providing a 24‑hour hotline (3754‑8100) for reporting people in need. Sub‑secretary Leonardo Yunger detailed the Operativo Frío, noting contributions from firefighters, the army, universities and over 40 institutions, delivering about 300 blankets, 150 mattresses and 150 pairs of shoes each month. Approximately 1,820 families receive gas vouchers, and 35 municipal kitchens and canteens continue to serve hot meals throughout the coldest weeks.

Across the region, authorities and community groups are coordinating donations, shelter space and emergency assistance to prevent hypothermia and protect the most vulnerable during the polar cold spell.
