Coldiretti calls for wheat origin transparency in Italian pasta

Coldiretti, Italy’s main agricultural organization, has expressed strong support for a new promotional campaign by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry (Masaf). The campaign, which features the Italian national volleyball team, aims to promote pasta made with 100% Italian wheat and improve consumer transparency regarding ingredient origins.

Coldiretti argues that current labeling can be misleading, as products marked ‘Made in Italy’ often contain imported wheat. The organization highlighted that while the Italian pasta industry’s turnover has grown from €3.5 billion twenty years ago to over €7 billion today, much of this relies on foreign raw materials. Specifically, they noted that much of the imported wheat, particularly from Canada, is treated with glyphosate—a substance prohibited in Italy and the EU but permitted in the country of origin.

To protect domestic farmers and consumer health, Coldiretti is calling for stricter controls at ports and borders, more advanced traceability technologies, and clearer shelf labeling. They have also proposed creating dedicated spaces in large-scale retail for 100% Italian wheat pasta to ensure consumers can make informed choices.
