Coldiretti protests EU procurement rules on ultra-processed foods

Coldiretti and Filiera Italia have criticized the European Union's proposed Public Procurement Act, arguing that it fails to ban ultra-processed foods in public tender processes for canteens. The organizations claim this omission threatens public health, particularly for children, and could strain healthcare systems.

In Italy, some local administrations are already taking action. The Municipality of Rome, for instance, has excluded ultra-processed foods from its new school catering tenders, opting instead to prioritize seasonal, local, and high-quality agricultural products.

Advocates point to scientific studies linking ultra-processed foods to 32 adverse health effects, including obesity and issues related to gastrointestinal, metabolic, respiratory, and cardiovascular health. In response to these risks, the 'Campagna Amica per la Salute' initiative was launched to promote healthy eating habits through a partnership between farmers and medical professionals.
