Coldplay tour halves emissions of mega‑events, researchers find
Researchers from the University of Cambridge have shown that fan travel accounts for the bulk of carbon emissions from mega‑events such as the FIFA World Cup. The 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico and Canada generated about 4.23 million tonnes of CO₂, with 82 % coming from spectators’ journeys, mainly flights, and an estimated climate cost of $787 million.
The band Coldplay’s 2024 European tour of 32 concerts demonstrated how event organisers can cut emissions. By using solar power, rechargeable batteries, low‑carbon fuels and an app that let fans calculate travel footprints, the tour reduced fan‑travel emissions by 48 % and overall tour emissions by roughly half. The band rewarded low‑carbon travel with discounts on merchandise, showing a practical model for reducing the environmental impact of large‑scale events.
The researchers suggest that incentives such as discounted tickets, modest price increases (about $11 per ticket) or a small global broadcast levy could offset the climate damage of future mega‑events.
