Coldstream joins British Columbia e-scooter pilot project

The District of Coldstream has approved participation in the Provincial Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project, which is scheduled to run from September 1, 2026, through April 5, 2028. Under this provincial framework, riders aged 16 and older will be permitted to operate e-scooters throughout the district in compliance with the provincial Motor Vehicle Act.

While the district is not currently proposing additional local restrictions, officials noted that council may amend bylaws to restrict or prohibit use on specific roads if safety concerns arise. E-scooters remain strictly prohibited on all School District 22 properties.

The decision follows regional debates regarding the safety and enforcement of electric mobility devices. Local law enforcement, including the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP, has previously addressed concerns involving high speeds and the unsafe operation of e-bikes and e-scooters in pedestrian-heavy areas.
