Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet ruled out for season with knee injury
Chicago Bears tight end Cole Kmet will miss the remainder of the season following a serious right knee injury sustained during a Thursday night victory over the New England Patriots. Kmet, the team’s longest-tenured offensive player, was carted off the field in the fourth quarter after a collision on the sideline.
Head coach Ben Johnson described the injury as a significant loss, noting that Kmet is a vital part of the team’s heartbeat. The injury is particularly impactful due to the Bears' offensive scheme, which relies heavily on multiple tight end formations. The team has utilized multiple tight ends on 51% of its offensive plays this season, well above the NFL average of 31.5%.
To address the vacancy, the Bears may look to rookie Sam Roush or practice squad member Stephen Carlson. Coach Johnson also indicated that the team is monitoring the recovery of undrafted rookie Hayden Large, who is currently on injured reserve.
