Cole Palmer injury sparks debate over football calendar
The recent withdrawal of Cole Palmer from the England national team has ignited a debate regarding the physical toll of the expanding football calendar. Following Palmer's release due to injury management, England manager Thomas Tuchel remarked that the Chelsea attacker “loses too many opportunities,” a comment that has drawn criticism from player representatives.
Maheta Molango, executive director of the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), described Palmer as a “victim of a sick calendar” during a Fifpro summit in London. Molango argued that the current density of club and international fixtures is pushing athletes to their biological limits. The issue is highlighted by the fact that five England players—including Marcus Rashford, Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, and Tino Livramento—were also forced to withdraw from recent international duties due to physical issues.
Palmer, 24, has faced increasing injury frequency, missing 26 matches across club and international levels last season. The player has reportedly gone nearly three seasons without a full break due to consecutive summer tournaments, including the U-21 European Championship and various club competitions.
