Venezuela earthquake recovery: structural assessments and debris recycling underway
Following the dual earthquakes in June with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, which caused nearly 6,500 deaths and left 18,000 people homeless, Venezuela is managing large-scale recovery and structural assessments. In La Guaira, authorities have collected 2.1 million tons of debris, with plans to recycle materials into construction supplies through a circular economy initiative. The United States has provided 20 heavy machines to support these efforts.
The Colegio de Ingenieros de Venezuela (CIV) has completed an initial inspection phase of over 11,000 buildings in the Greater Caracas area. Their findings indicate that 75% of the structures are safe and habitable, 13% require usage restrictions due to minor damage, and 10% are classified as high-risk or uninhabitable. Engineers have warned against making unauthorized structural modifications during repairs, noting that improper reinforcements could compromise building stability during future seismic events.
Search efforts continue in various sectors. In the Bahía Mar residences, drones helped locate the bodies of seven family members among the rubble. Meanwhile, professional organizations are preparing for a second phase of specialized inspections in coordination with local municipalities to ensure long-term urban safety.
