Venezuela earthquake recovery: Massive debris recycling plan launched
Two powerful earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck Venezuela on June 24, causing widespread devastation. The seismic events, described as a 'doublet,' primarily impacted the coastal state of La Guaira, as well as Caracas, Miranda, Aragua, Falcón, and Carabobo.
Official reports indicate a severe human toll, with death counts reaching approximately 6,500 and over 18,000 people left without housing. More than 16,000 individuals have been injured. The damage to infrastructure is extensive, with 856 buildings affected and 190 having collapsed. In La Guaira, the local economy has suffered a massive contraction, with some reports indicating an 80% drop in revenue for local merchants.
In response to the crisis, the Venezuelan government has initiated a large-scale reconstruction plan. This includes a circular economy initiative to process approximately 2.1 million tons of earthquake debris. The Ministry of Ecosocialism plans to crush and recycle these materials—such as concrete, steel, and wood—into construction supplies like blocks and urban furniture, a process expected to reduce debris volume by up to 80%. The recovery and debris management efforts are estimated to take approximately one year.
