Coletivo Grão Comum to premiere play about Joaquim Nabuco in Recife

Coletivo Grão Comum will premiere its new theatrical production, ‘Joaquim Nabuco – Do Cativeiro à Consciência’, on Tuesday, the 29th, at the Teatro Hermilo Borba Filho in Recife. Written and directed by Jr. Aguiar, the play utilizes metatheater and historical drama to examine the life of the Pernambucan abolitionist.

Rather than presenting Nabuco as a flawless hero, the production aims to explore his contradictions and use his legacy to spark discussions on structural racism, inherited privilege, and social consciousness in contemporary Brazil. The performance features a cast including Paulo César Freire, Ricardo Andrade, Jefferson Embuá, Eron Villar, Felipe Baobá, and Telma Melo, with historical figures such as Machado de Assis and Eufrásia Teixeira Leite appearing in the mosaic of voices.
