Colima population aging poses educational planning challenges

Data from the 2025 Intercensal Survey conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicates that the population of Colima, Mexico, is aging. During a presentation at the University of Colima, state coordinator Alfonso Radillo Contreras reported that the median age in the state rose from 30 years in 2020 to 33 years in 2025.

This demographic shift, characterized by a decreasing proportion of children and adolescents alongside an increase in older age groups, presents new challenges for educational planning, specifically for upper secondary and higher education levels.

As of October 15, 2025, the estimated total population of Colima was 762,212. Manzanillo remains the most populous municipality with 205,802 residents, followed by Colima and Villa de Álvarez. The population is 51.1% female and 48.9% male.
