Colin Kaepernick faces criticism over activism and identity
Colin Kaepernick has faced criticism from media personalities regarding his social justice activism and racial identity. During a broadcast of The Breakfast Club, Charlamagne Tha God suggested that Kaepernick’s advocacy for social justice often coincides with commercial interests, specifically noting the promotion of his new memoir, ‘The Perilous Fight’. Charlamagne questioned Kaepernick’s past leadership, noting that while Kaepernick expressed a wish that more NFL players had joined his 2016 protests, he did not personally call for a league-wide boycott or strike at the time.
Separately, Kaepernick discussed his racial identity, stating that he identifies as a Black man despite being raised by white adoptive parents in Wisconsin. He noted that while his parents operated with a sense of colorblindness, they did not fully prepare him for how the world would treat him based on his race. Commentator Jason Whitlock criticized this perspective, arguing that his parents' approach contributed to his professional success and that his current focus on racial identity is a departure from that stability.
