Collagen and retinol effectiveness in skin and joint health
Scientific reviews and dermatological experts have clarified the distinct roles and effectiveness of collagen and retinol in skincare. A comprehensive review published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum, synthesizing 113 randomized clinical trials involving nearly 8,000 participants, found that collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity and hydration, as well as reduce pain and stiffness in patients with osteoarthritis.
Dermatologists emphasize that collagen and retinol function differently. Collagen is a structural protein that provides firmness; it is most effective when ingested as peptides, as topical collagen creams are often too large to penetrate the skin and act primarily as moisturizers. In contrast, retinol is a form of vitamin A applied topically to stimulate cell turnover, increase collagen production, and repair sun damage. While collagen shows benefits for hydration, retinol remains the preferred topical option for addressing fine lines and wrinkles.
