Collagen supplements: Production methods and dietary alternatives
Medical experts are providing insights into the collagen supplement industry and offering dietary alternatives for maintaining skin and joint health.
During an appearance on ‘The One Show’, a doctor explained that the collagen industry relies heavily on animal waste products from meat and fish processing, such as chicken claws, pig trotters, ears, and skin. These materials are processed with hydrochloric acid to create supplements. While the decline of natural collagen production with age makes supplements seem logical, some experts question their effectiveness.
In contrast, dermatologists suggest that individuals over 25 can support collagen production through a balanced diet rather than relying solely on powders or capsules. Key recommendations include consuming foods rich in Vitamin C, such as bell peppers, broccoli, kale, kiwi, and oranges, to aid collagen synthesis. Additionally, maintaining adequate protein intake through sources like eggs, fish, meat, legumes, and soy is considered a more fundamental approach to supporting the body’s structural proteins.
