Collagen treatments and supplement efficacy for skin aging

Medical experts and nutritionists are providing guidance on collagen usage for skin health and aging. The concept of ‘collagen banking’ involves preventative dermatological strategies to stimulate collagen production while the skin still maintains its structure, rather than waiting for wrinkles or sagging to appear. Dr. Aldo Valeriani notes that natural collagen production typically decreases by approximately 1% annually starting around age 20.

While aesthetic procedures like fractional CO2 laser are medically recognized for stimulation, nutritionists are issuing warnings regarding oral supplements. The Colegio de Profesionales en Nutrición (CPN) and nutritionist Elizabeth Delgado highlight that many collagen powders and pills lack robust scientific backing for ‘miraculous’ results.

Experts explain that when collagen is ingested, the digestive system breaks it down into smaller components, meaning it does not travel directly to specific areas like the skin or joints. While supplements may offer modest benefits for hydration and elasticity, they are not a magic formula for eliminating wrinkles or curing joint pain, and a balanced diet remains a primary way to support natural production.
