Collahuasi receives environmental approval for water pumping adjustments
Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi has received environmental approval to adjust its water pumping schedule in the Coposa basin within Chile's Tarapacá Region. This decision follows delays in the construction of the company's desalination plant, which is a critical component for the mine's water transition.
The new schedule postpones the start of groundwater extraction reductions from January 2025 to mid-2026. However, the company plans to implement deeper cuts in extraction over the remaining 186 months of the mine's lifespan. This adjustment is expected to result in a lower total volume of water consumed compared to the original 2021 environmental resolution.
Additionally, the approval includes a US$5 million investment intended to strengthen the electrical infrastructure used for mineral transport.
