Collectible Card Games Offer Speculative Investment Opportunities, Warns Stiftung Warentest

Trading Card Games such as Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu‑Gi‑Oh! and One Piece have grown into a market where individual cards can fetch high prices. According to the consumer‑magazine Stiftung Warentest, a card’s value is driven primarily by its age, condition and rarity, with additional factors such as nostalgia, timing and tournament relevance influencing price.

The publication cautions that the market is highly speculative. Re‑prints of sets, bans on cards for tournament play, or changes in publisher policy can cause sudden price drops. Investors also face fraud risks, including counterfeit cards and tampered booster packs where valuable cards are removed and replaced before resale. Stiftung Warentest therefore recommends that collectors treat cards as a hobby rather than a reliable financial investment.
