College Board redesigns AP World Languages exams

The College Board has implemented a significant redesign of the Advanced Placement (AP) World Languages and Cultures exams, effective for the 2026-2027 school year. The updates transition the testing experience to a fully digital format via the Bluebook application and introduce a more project-focused assessment structure.

A major component of the new format is the inclusion of a course project and presentation, which accounts for 35% of the total exam score. This includes a Project Presentation (20%) based on student research and a Project Q&A (15%) designed to test spontaneous interpersonal speaking skills.

Additionally, the multiple-choice section has been streamlined to 55 questions focused on listening and reading comprehension. This section will now follow the oral portion of the exam. While the changes aim to emphasize real-world communication and deeper subject knowledge, some students and educators have expressed concerns regarding the reduction of available online study materials and the shift in preparation requirements.
