College Fire Safety Month launched to prevent dormitory fires

September has been designated as College Fire Safety Month to address the increased risk of fires as students move into dormitories and off-campus housing. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Center for Campus Fire Safety (CCFS) are highlighting safe cooking practices and lithium-ion battery safety as critical areas of concern.

National statistics from 2020 to 2024 show that U.S. fire departments responded to an annual average of 3,198 structure fires in student-related properties. These incidents resulted in an average of two civilian deaths and $20 million in direct property damage annually. Approximately 75% of these fires originated in kitchens or cooking areas, with unattended cooking equipment being the most frequent cause of ignition.

In Massachusetts, Governor Maura Healey has officially proclaimed the month to encourage safety vigilance. State fire officials noted that Massachusetts reported over 2,500 fires in student housing between 2021 and 2025, causing millions in damages. Officials recommend that students test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms immediately upon moving in and ensure they have identified multiple exit routes.
