College football faces officiating disputes and racial abuse incidents

A series of officiating controversies and social incidents marked a weekend of college football. In a double-overtime matchup, the Miami Hurricanes defeated Florida State amid disputes regarding how referees handled two Hail Mary completions that could have resulted in touchdowns.

Following the game, Miami defensive end Damon Wilson II was targeted in a racist tirade via direct messages. The messages, which included racial and homophobic slurs and references to segregation, were allegedly sent by Kade McLendon, an individual identified via social media and LinkedIn as a former Florida State student and current computer technician for The Florida Bar.

Elsewhere, Notre Dame’s 16-game winning streak ended with a 28-24 loss to BYU. The Big 12 Conference noted that the game ended one second earlier than it should have due to a clock miscue, and analysts suggested a missed pass interference call on the final play may have impacted the outcome.
