College football players named to Chuck Bednarik Award watchlist

Several college football players have been named to the preseason watchlist for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which recognizes the top defensive player in the nation.

From the University of Alabama, three players earned spots on the list: junior defensive back Zabien Brown, senior safety Bray Hubbard, and senior linebacker/edge rusher Yhonzae Pierre. Brown and Hubbard were also recently named to the preseason All-SEC first team. Pierre joins the list following a season where he recorded eight sacks.

Representing the University of Houston, defensive back Will James has also been included on the watchlist. James enters the upcoming season following a campaign where he earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors and led the Cougars with three interceptions.
