College football players seek fifth-year eligibility through court rulings

Student-athletes from the high school graduating class of 2022 are pursuing legal avenues to secure a fifth year of college football eligibility. While a Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals stay has paused certain federal protections, individual state court rulings are creating a fragmented landscape for player eligibility.

In Kentucky, Alex Afari has requested to be added to an existing injunction in a Jefferson County case. A hearing to determine his eligibility is scheduled for August 31 at 10:45 AM ET. This move follows similar legal successes in other regions, such as a Louisiana judge granting former player Dae’Quan Wright permission to return to LSU.

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer addressed the ongoing legal uncertainty, noting that athletic director Greg Byrne is monitoring the situation. DeBoer indicated that while former players like Kam Dewberry could potentially return depending on court rulings, the coaching staff must focus on current roster developments and cannot control the legal outcomes.
