College Football Playoff Expansion Stalled as Big Ten and SEC Disagree
Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey remain at odds over expanding the College Football Playoff from the current 12‑team format to a proposed 24‑team field. A Dec. 1 deadline looms for a decision that would take effect in 2027, leaving programs such as Oregon uncertain about their postseason path.
Meanwhile, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian highlighted the strategic value of a tough non‑conference schedule. He cited Texas’ recent loss to Florida and the upcoming game against Ohio State, arguing that strong early‑season opponents can improve a team’s résumé for CFP selection, even though they carry the risk of early blemishes. Sarkisian emphasized that the CFP selection committee will weigh strength of schedule heavily when evaluating at‑large bids.
