College football teams address offensive line penalty issues
College football programs Michigan and Missouri are both working to address significant offensive line penalty issues following early-season struggles.
Michigan has faced difficulties with its offensive line, impacting the team's run game, which currently averages 149.0 yards per game. The unit has dealt with injuries to tackles Andrew Sprague and Blake Frazier, alongside frequent alignment and holding penalties. Offensive line coach Jim Harding is focusing on correcting these mistakes, specifically ensuring linemen release blocks properly to avoid penalties.
Similarly, the Missouri Tigers have struggled with self-inflicted mistakes, particularly holding calls and false starts. Following a loss to Mississippi State, offensive lineman Dominick Giudice noted that the team is emphasizing discipline in practice to avoid ‘shooting ourselves in the foot’ through avoidable penalties.
