College Free Speech Rankings show varying campus climates

The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) has released its latest College Free Speech Rankings, evaluating universities based on policies, past controversies, and student surveys regarding political tolerance and self-censorship.

Purdue University received high marks, ranking third among public schools and seventh overall. The university, which endorsed the Chicago Statement in 2015, saw its score improve slightly to 76.9. Purdue Provost Patrick Wolfe noted that the institution aims to foster an environment for robust and uninhibited debate.

In contrast, several Pennsylvania institutions, including Carnegie Mellon, Duquesne, and the University of Pittsburgh, received failing grades. The report indicates that Pennsylvania’s average speech climate grade is an F, which is below the national average of D-. Survey data from the state showed that 42% of students reported self-censoring on campus at least once or twice a month. While Pitt was the only regional school to improve its ranking by 14 spots, it remains among those with failing grades according to the report.
