College housing costs rise above inflation for families

College housing and move-in expenses are rising significantly, placing increased financial pressure on families. Data from the College Board indicates that room-and-board charges at public four-year colleges have climbed 9 percent above inflation over the last five years. Since 2009, non-inflation-adjusted room-and-board fees at public universities have risen by more than 20 percent.

Beyond institutional fees, families face a surge in costs for dorm essentials, technology, bedding, storage, and transportation. These expenses often coincide with tuition bills, enrollment deposits, and meal plans, creating a substantial seasonal spending spike. For many households, the transition to the autumn semester requires significant financial planning or specialized retail financing to manage the costs of furnishing dorm rooms and acquiring necessary academic materials.
