College students face rising mental health symptoms mid-semester

Research published in the Journal of Affective Disorders indicates that college students often experience increased symptoms of depression and anxiety as academic semesters progress. A study analyzing data from over 650,000 students across seven years found that these symptoms typically peak around weeks 11 and 12 of the term, with more significant fluctuations observed during the fall semester compared to the spring.

While the study distinguishes between general academic exhaustion and clinical mental health struggles, it highlights a trend of rising psychological distress during the mid-semester period. Students facing these challenges are encouraged to utilize campus resources, such as Counseling Prevention Services, to manage the transition through the academic year.
