A political dispute has emerged in Colón regarding the future of the municipality's waste collection contract, which is set to expire in April. Mayor Diógenes Galván is facing opposition from a group within the Municipal Council that seeks to grant a 20-year contract extension and an additional $250,000 to the current concessionaire, Aguaseo.

Mayor Galván has rejected the extension, instead announcing plans to launch an open international bidding process. To ensure transparency, the Mayor intends to involve international institutions, noting that he is utilizing a landfill diagnostic study provided by the CAF (Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean) and receiving advisory support from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
