Colón Zoo in Matanzas suffers severe decay and neglect

The Colón micro zoo in Matanzas, Cuba, has fallen into a state of severe decay, characterized by empty cages, overgrown weeds, and accumulated trash. Social media footage has highlighted the deterioration of the former recreational site, which once served many local families.

Activists have reported long-standing neglect. Daylin Cardona of the Huellas de Amor Project stated that her organization had been sending evidence of poor animal conditions to the Ministry of Agriculture for six months prior to the zoo's closure. Reports indicate that while authorities eventually shut down the facility, animals remained inside for a period. One report claims two lions died after attacking each other due to a lack of separate facilities.

Other activists, including Adriana Piña Herrera, have criticized the official response, describing the zoo's closure as a superficial measure that failed to address the immediate suffering of the animals.
