Cologne Cathedral offers free admission during Epiphany pilgrimage

Cologne Cathedral is offering free admission for four days this week to coincide with the Epiphany pilgrimage. While the cathedral has charged a twelve-euro entry fee since July 1 to cover rising maintenance costs, the pilgrimage allows for free access outside of scheduled religious services.

The free access schedule includes Thursday and Friday from 14:00 to 18:00, Saturday from 10:00 to 17:00, and Sunday from 13:00 to 17:00. All religious services remain free to attend.

Former cathedral master builder Barbara Schock-Werner noted that since the introduction of the entry fee, visitor numbers have decreased significantly. She observed that while this has reduced the previous crowd-related chaos and created a quieter, museum-like atmosphere, there is a concern that the cathedral may lose its role as a central point of identity for the people of Cologne.
