Cologne Cathedral: Short visits for prayer remain free
Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki has clarified that short visits to the Cologne Cathedral for prayer and reflection remain free of charge. This statement follows the introduction of a 12-euro admission fee for full tourist sightseeing, a measure implemented two months ago to cover rising maintenance costs for the UNESCO World Heritage site.
While critics have expressed concern over the loss of easy, free access to the entire cathedral, Woelki emphasized that the building remains a house of God. Visitors wishing to pray or seek quiet can still enter through a side entrance for free, though this access is limited to a specific section of the interior. The fee is specifically required for those wishing to conduct a full tourist tour of the entire interior space.
