Cologne court supports RheinEnergieSportpark expansion plan

The Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia has rejected legal challenges from environmental groups against the development plan for the expansion of the RheinEnergieSportpark in Cologne-Sülz. The plan, originally approved by the Cologne City Council in June 2020, aims to secure the expansion of sports facilities used by 1. FC Köln, including the Franz-Kremer Stadium and the Geißbockheim.

The expansion includes several artificial turf football pitches and a two-story football performance center. While the project involves utilizing parts of the outer green belt at Gleueler Wiese, the court ruled that the development plan is valid provided that planning requirements are met and public and private interests are properly weighed. This decision follows a previous ruling in November 2022 that had declared the plan invalid due to insufficient weighing of interests regarding small playing fields.
