Cologne District Court begins trial for major marijuana robbery

The trial for seven suspects involved in a major marijuana robbery has commenced at the Cologne District Court. The defendants, aged between 36 and 48, face charges including particularly serious robbery, dangerous bodily harm, false imprisonment, and armed cannabis trafficking.

The case stems from a June 2024 robbery of approximately 350 kilograms of marijuana from a warehouse in Hürth, near Cologne. Prosecutors believe the suspects, armed with machine pistols, assaulted and bound warehouse guards to seize the drugs. The incident is cited as the catalyst for a violent period of crime in the region known as the ‘Cologne drug war’.

Following the theft, the victimized gang allegedly engaged in a series of violent retaliations to recover the drugs, including hostage-taking, torture, and explosive attacks. A separate trial involving a 24-year-old suspected gang leader has been ongoing for several months.
