Cologne faces budget deficit and cultural funding challenges
The city of Cologne is preparing to adopt its 2027/28 biennial budget amid significant financial strain. The city expects a deficit of 811.3 million euros next year, rising to 931.4 million euros in 2028, totaling a deficit of over 1.7 billion euros for the two-year period.
To address these shortfalls, the city plans to cut approximately 250 million euros annually, primarily impacting social services and cultural offerings. Proposed measures also include increasing various fees. In response to these potential cuts, demonstrations have been organized in front of the city hall.
Amidst these broader municipal challenges, the Immisitzung carnival ensemble has secured its future for the 2027 session. After facing financial difficulties due to rising costs, the group successfully utilized crowdfunding, sponsorships, and volunteer efforts to fund 18 performances scheduled for January and February 2027 at the Bürgerhaus Stollwerck.
