Cologne honors former Lord Mayor Konrad Adenauer

The city of Cologne is holding a commemorative ceremony to honor the legacy of Konrad Adenauer, the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. The event is part of a series of celebrations marking the upcoming 150th anniversary of his birth on January 5, 2026.

Adenauer served as the Lord Mayor of Cologne during two periods: from 1917 to 1933 and again in 1945. A city spokesperson noted that his tenure included visionary urban planning decisions and projects that continue to influence the city today.

The ceremony, held at the historic Cologne City Hall, includes a welcome by current Lord Mayor Torsten Burmester, a speech from the Adenauer family, and a lecture by architect Kaspar Kraemer. The program also features a panel discussion including Burkhard Jung, the Lord Mayor of Leipzig and President of the German Association of Cities.
