Cologne Lichter Revamped as Rhine Reaches Record Low Water Level

The 2026 Cologne Lichter fireworks display is being restructured because the Rhine River has fallen to an exceptionally low level. Organisers will reduce the number of ships in the traditional convoy, move the starting point to the northern district of Niehl, and cancel the lead fire ship. Large excursion boats will stay docked, and a shallower freight vessel will carry the fireworks. Barriers will be placed on the right bank near the Tanzbrunnen, but the fireworks themselves will still be shown as scheduled.

In nearby Koblenz, the annual "Rhein in Flammen" festival is selling limited tickets for its river‑cruise viewing. As of late July, a standard seat with a buffet on the 8 August cruise costs €225 per person, with some tickets already sold out. Prospective visitors are advised to monitor the ticket platforms for any released seats from cancellations.
