Cologne police investigate bar shooting and violent protest clashes

Cologne has experienced a series of violent incidents involving shootings and large-scale civil unrest. On the morning of September 5, 2026, a man opened fire on a bar in the Ostheim district. At least five shots were fired, with four hitting the establishment. A homicide commission is investigating the incident, which may be linked to a series of recent attacks on Turkish-owned businesses in the region. Authorities are exploring whether these shootings are connected to extortion attempts by criminal groups referred to as the 'Turkish Gen-Z Mafia'.

Simultaneously, a large-scale demonstration in central Cologne was forcibly stopped by police following violent clashes. During the protest, which focused on global peace, masked individuals attacked law enforcement with fire extinguishers, pyrotechnics, and steel balls. The confrontation resulted in injuries to 11 police officers, one of whom was unable to continue duty. Police have launched criminal proceedings for dangerous bodily harm and breach of the peace.
