Cologne Prosecutors Probe Police and Doctor over April Incident

The Cologne public prosecutor's office has opened investigations into two police officers and an emergency doctor following a police operation on 8 April in the Cologne‑Deutz district. The probe concerns an alleged offence of bodily harm committed in the line of duty.

A video of the incident, which only became known to prosecutors in the past week, prompted the renewed scrutiny. The operation involved a man who was reported to be in a mental emergency and was taken to a clinic. Prosecutors are reviewing the proportionality of the police measures, the medical actions ordered by the doctor – including a possible medication administration – and the legality of the manner in which the man was restrained. No personal details about the man have been released, and the authorities stress the presumption of innocence for all persons under investigation.
