Cologne protesters march against arms industry

Approximately 2,000 people participated in a large-scale anti-militarist demonstration in Cologne, marking the conclusion of the ‘Rheinmetall Entwaffnen’ (Disarm Rheinmetall) protest camp. The protesters demanded an end to arms deliveries, the abolition of compulsory military service, and a halt to military operations.

The demonstration, which began at Cologne Cathedral Square, was characterized by a combative atmosphere. Participants used slogans such as ‘War against war’ and ‘Disarm Rheinmetall’ to voice opposition to the arms industry and the perceived link between militarization and the reduction of social welfare.

Police presence was significant, with around 1,000 officers deployed to manage the event and secure the city center. Tensions rose during the proceedings when police cordoned off a smaller group of demonstrators following the reported use of pyrotechnics. This followed earlier confrontations during the week, including an incident where protesters blocked access to a Bundeswehr barracks in Cologne-Longerich.
