Cologne schools launch initiatives to improve student road safety

Schools in Cologne are implementing various initiatives to improve pedestrian safety and encourage independent travel for students. In one project, the OSK Offene Schule Köln and EMAnuel Grundschule collaborated with traffic police to place bright yellow footprints on the ground. These markings guide children along safe routes and clear crossing points, serving as a visual tool for traffic education and a reminder for drivers to slow down.

In the Zündorf district, the GGS Schmittgasse and GGS Irisweg primary schools have launched the ‘Walking to School’ campaign. Aimed at approximately 550 students, the initiative encourages children to use walking, cycling, or public transport instead of being driven by parents. The program seeks to reduce traffic congestion caused by ‘parent taxis,’ foster student independence, and promote environmental protection by reducing vehicle emissions.
