Cologne Zoo closes several areas due to bird flu detection
The Cologne Zoo has implemented precautionary measures following the detection of the avian influenza virus in newly acquired ducks. The affected birds were located in a non-public quarantine unit at the time of the diagnosis.
To protect the zoo's bird population, several areas containing free-flying birds have been temporarily closed to visitors. These include the Hippodom, the Eulenkloster, and the walk-through enclosures. Additionally, scheduled flight shows have been canceled, meaning visitors cannot currently see specific birds such as the black kite Milo or the bald eagle Paco.
Zoo Director Theo Pagel stated that the closures are strictly precautionary and that there is no danger to human visitors. The zoo remains largely operational, with the new giraffe enclosure and the Dragon House, which houses Komodo dragons, remaining open. The zoo is coordinating with relevant authorities and will provide updates regarding the reopening of the restricted areas.
