Cologne Zoo Welcomes First Sulawesi Babirusa Piglet

On late May 2026, a female Sulawesi babirusa piglet named Peri was born at Cologne Zoo in Germany, marking the first successful breeding of this endangered species in the zoo.

Peri measures about 50 cm in length and weighs roughly 6 kg; she is cared for by her mother Dua Hati in a 1,000‑square‑metre enclosure shared with Asian wild cattle and Prince Alfred deer. Zoo inspector Robin Lammers said the birth supports the zoo’s conservation program.

The Sulawesi babirusa, native to Sulawesi island in Indonesia, is listed as endangered by the IUCN due to habitat loss, hunting and disease. The zoo’s breeding effort aims to help preserve the species, and the piglet’s name, meaning “fairy” in Indonesian, was chosen by a keeper.
