Colombia advances energy links with Venezuela, Ecuador as court halts special economic zone

The Colombian government issued two new resolutions to modernize the legal framework for electric interconnection with Venezuela and Ecuador. The measures set clear rules for the operation, rehabilitation and safety of cross‑border power lines, while guaranteeing that national electricity demand is not compromised. Officials said the steps aim to strengthen regional energy cooperation and position Colombia as a reliable electricity supplier.

Separately, Colombia's Constitutional Court ruled that the Memorandum of Understanding establishing a binational Special Economic Zone with Venezuela must be sent to Congress for approval before it can take effect. The court held that the agreement is a treaty requiring legislative ratification, temporarily suspending the project pending parliamentary review.
