Colombia affirms bilateral ties with Brazil transcend political shifts
The Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the relationship between Colombia and Brazil, particularly regarding cooperation in security and justice, “transcends political conjunctures.” This declaration follows the first round of the 2026 Brazilian presidential elections.
The statement comes amid discussions regarding Brazil's potential entry into the Escudo das Américas, a regional initiative aimed at combating transnational organized crime. While Colombia is currently a member of the alliance, Brazil is not. The possibility of Brazilian membership became a point of debate during the election cycle, with candidate Flávio Bolsonaro expressing intent to join the alliance if elected.
Colombia emphasized that bilateral cooperation is based on the permanent interests of both states and will continue regardless of decisions regarding the Escudo das Américas or other international initiatives. The Colombian government also affirmed its respect for Brazilian sovereignty and the right of Brazilian authorities to decide on international memberships.
