Colombia agriculture faces peso appreciation, earthquake, and El Niño

The Colombian agricultural sector is facing a multifaceted crisis driven by currency fluctuations, natural disasters, and climate threats. The appreciation of the Colombian peso is reducing the local currency income for producers who sell goods like coffee, flowers, bananas, oil palm, sugar, and avocados in international markets.

In addition to economic pressures, an earthquake has caused significant damage to farms, machinery, and infrastructure, particularly within the Coffee Axis region. The National Federation of Coffee Growers is currently conducting farm-by-farm assessments to determine the full extent of these losses.

Furthermore, the threat of a high-intensity El Niño phenomenon is adding pressure to production costs and recovery capabilities. While coffee exports continue to operate, some shipments have been redirected to the ports of Cartagena and Santa Marta following temporary activity suspensions in Buenaventura due to inspections.
