Colombia Implements 42‑Hour Workweek Amid Productivity and Well‑Being Debate

Colombia’s Labour Ministry is finalising a gradual reduction of the standard workweek from 48 to 42 hours, as mandated by Law 2101 of 2021. The schedule lowers weekly hours by one each year from 2023 through 2026, while preserving salaries and benefits. Employers have used the transition to reorganise shifts, automate routine tasks and refocus performance metrics on results rather than hours.

Proponents argue the shorter week should enhance workers’ personal time and overall well‑being. Critics warn that without accompanying investment in technology, training and infrastructure, the change may merely redistribute existing productivity challenges, especially in regions where informality and weak connectivity persist. Colombia currently records the lowest labour productivity among OECD members, averaging about US$21 per hour versus the OECD average of US$71. The reform aims to raise that figure by encouraging more efficient work practices alongside the reduced hours.
