South American earthquakes in Colombia and Venezuela linked to distinct tectonic processes

Recent high-magnitude earthquakes in Colombia and Venezuela have been confirmed by geologists to be independent events caused by different tectonic mechanisms. On August 10, 2026, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck near San José del Palmar, Chocó, in Colombia. This deep-seated event, occurring at a depth of approximately 96 to 120 kilometers, was caused by the subduction of the Nazca plate beneath the South American plate. The tremor was felt across Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama, and has been linked to at least 132 deaths.

In contrast, the major earthquakes in Venezuela on June 24, 2026, which reached magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, resulted from lateral movement between the Caribbean and South American plates. NASA geologist Adriana Ocampo clarified that these seismic activities are not part of a single chain reaction but are natural manifestations of the region's complex tectonic interactions.

In response to the humanitarian impact in Venezuela, the digital health platform ReservaDoc mobilized over 5,000 medical professionals to provide free clinical and psychological support. Meanwhile, Cáritas Venezuela has urged the public to avoid setting up improvised shelters, advising that relief efforts should be managed through inspected infrastructure and specialized agencies to ensure safety and proper medical care.
