Tolima forest fires cause massive agricultural and economic damage
Colombia is facing a severe environmental emergency as forest fires have consumed over 50,000 hectares of vegetation and crops, with the department of Tolima being the most heavily impacted. Approximately 28,000 hectares of these affected areas are used for agriculture, impacting 2,660 producers across 23 municipalities.
Economic losses are estimated to exceed 134,000 million pesos (approximately 42 million dollars). The crisis has also placed roughly 163,000 animals at risk due to the loss of food and water sources. In the livestock sector, Fedegán reports that climate phenomena and fires have caused significant losses, including the death of thousands of cattle.
In response, President Abelardo de la Espriella has launched the ‘Environmental, Productive, Rural, and Security Recovery Plan’. Key measures include providing 343 subsidies of 65 million pesos each for the reconstruction of rural homes, allocating 7,000 million pesos for productive projects, and distributing 5,000 tons each of hay and rice bran to support livestock. Additionally, the government has offered a reward of up to 50 million pesos for information leading to the capture of those responsible for the fires, amid allegations that some blazes may be linked to mining interests.
