Colombia earthquake response: Aid flows as political tensions rise
Colombia is grappling with the aftermath of a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that has caused approximately 30 trillion pesos in direct physical losses. The disaster has resulted in at least 294 deaths, over 4,000 injuries, and roughly 500 missing persons. President Abelardo de la Espriella has ordered continued search and rescue operations in heavily affected cities like Cali and Pereira, despite low survival prospects.
International and private aid is flowing into the country. The United States has sent 10 tons of supplies and pledged $26.5 million for reconstruction. Other nations, including China, Germany, India, and several European countries, have provided food, medical supplies, and shelter. Locally, the mining company Drummond has donated $1.5 million, supplemented by 50 million pesos from its employees. In Valledupar, over 15 tons of aid were collected by local citizens and organizations.
The crisis has also triggered significant political developments. President De la Espriella is facing criticism for authorizing joint military operations with the United States under the Shield of the Americas coalition and for allowing an Israeli military contingent to assist in humanitarian efforts. Additionally, the administration is reportedly evaluating a withdrawal from the International Criminal Court. On the diplomatic front, María Consuelo Araújo Castro has been appointed as the new Colombian ambassador to the United States.
